A Tale of Two Fungi: Mold vs. Mildew

A Tale of Two Fungi: Mold vs. Mildew

Fungus is a natural part of our environment, but that doesn’t mean we want it in our homes or businesses. Two of the more common invasive fungi you may see are mold and mildew. Read on to learn how to spot the differences between the two so you’ll better understand how to address the cleanup.

  • Appearance – Mildew generally looks dry, speckled, or powdery and appears flat, while mold is described as raised, fuzzy or slimy. Mildew typically presents as a patch of white, gray, or black. Mold can be much more varied in color, looking green, blue, brown, black, yellow, or even red.
  • Smell – Both mold and mildew have similar odors, comparable to the smell of damp towels or rotting wood, but mold has a much more powerful odor, often described as foul or unpleasant. Because the smell of mold is so much stronger than the smell of mildew, you may smell mold even before you see it.
  • Location – Mildew grows only on item surfaces and typically grows outward, whereas mold burrows downward into floors and carpet, and upward into walls and ceilings.

Now that you’re able to differentiate between mold and mildew, it’s time to tackle the cleanup. Mildew spots can generally be managed with household cleaners. Look for bleach-based or ammonia-based cleaners but be sure never to mix the two as they create toxic fumes when combined. For small spots of mildew, an inexpensive 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water may be adequate. Mold, however, may require the hiring of an expert. The professionals at SERVPRO specialize in mold mitigation and can provide remediation and restoration to your home or business, as well as help you identify and eliminate the source of moisture causing the mold.

How To Get Rid Of Mold In Your Bathroom

Did you just discover mold in your bathroom? Well, you’re not alone.

The humidity in a bathroom creates an excellent atmosphere for mold to thrive.

However, many people are unaware of how to clean bathroom mold properly.

If you're also dealing with this issue, then be sure to follow our mold removal and prevention tips.

  1. Use Bleach

When it comes to removing mold from a bathroom, store-bought cleaners can be really handy.

Chlorine bleach is a good place to start.

Follow these steps:

  • Start by liberally spraying the cleaner directly over the moldy grout.
  • Allow at least 30 minutes for the bleach to work.
  • Using a firm brush, scrub the area.
  • Finally, use warm water to rinse away the gunk.

However, make sure your bathroom has enough ventilation throughout the process since bleaches are potential irritants.

[Important Tips: Open your bathroom window, wear a mask and rubber gloves, and turn on the bathroom fan]

  1. Make Your Own Mold Removal Solution

White vinegar is also a good alternative if you want to steer clear of strong chemicals.

To use the vinegar, pour it directly into a spray bottle. It doesn't need to be diluted in any way because it's most effective when it's not.

After spraying the vinegar, it’s preferable if you don’t rinse it away for lasting effects.

Although the odor is unpleasant, it usually dissipates after 1-2 hours. To assist the stench to go away faster, open a window or put on a fan.

However, if you find the stench to be overpowering, you can employ the services of any company specializing in odor removal services for additional protection against nasty molds.

  1. Prevention Is Better Than Cure

We know that cleaning mold can be a taxing task for many, especially given the busy routines in today’s fast-paced world.

So, how can you save yourself from the extra labor of cleaning unsightly bathroom mold? The answer is as simple as preventing it from forming in the first place.

Controlling moisture is the key to preventing most molds.

So, ensure good ventilation and fix any leakages in your bathroom. You can also use a sponge to remove water from your shower stall or bathtub.

Additionally, be mindful that damp bathroom items such as towels, bathmats, and shower curtains are ideal mold breeding grounds. Wash them regularly and allow them to air dry after each usage.

If feasible, you can also use water-resistant paint on your bathroom walls. Consider using paints that contain mold-repelling antimicrobial chemicals.

Parting Thoughts

Mold removal is a time-consuming process, but it is necessary for your health and to keep your bathroom sparkly clean.

Adequately cleaning your bathroom on a regular basis is a crucial step in preventing mold accumulation. Our expert team at SERVPRO can assist you in keeping your bathroom in pristine condition – now and always.

What happens when there is a forecast of rain, snow, or a storm?

We look up – specifically to the roof – to keep us and our facility protected.

In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that a business's first line of defense against relentless weather conditions is its roof.

Not only does a strong roof help your business establishment exist for generations to come, but it also tells your customers that you are diligent, professional, and mean business.

Ultimately, your customers’ perception of your business and revenues are affected by the condition and strength of your roof, and your business's ability to ride through storms – figurative and legit.

To keep your roof in top shape, you need frequent inspections. Exactly how often should you get the roof inspected?

Here’s all you need to know.

How Often Should You Inspect Your Roof

The magic number is two.

It would be best if you got your roof inspected twice each year. Once, before the onset of rainfall or snowfall season.

National Roofing Association approves the sound advice of inspecting twice each year.

New Roof versus An Old Roof

The general rule of thumb is to inspect your business' roof twice.

But if your roof is old, you must perform an inspection at least every three months.

Although frequent inspections sound a lot of work, they are imperative as they can be the step that protects both your business and the belongings inside the business.

When Should You Inspect Your Roof?

While two annual inspections are enough, some special conditions require extraordinary measures.

For instance, after an episode of strong winds, downpours, or hailstorm, your business' roofs can become susceptible to wear and tear. Since a leaky roof can lead to basement flooding too, due diligence during difficult conditions is important.

Moreover, harsh weather conditions, including strong heat, create fault lines that cause concern.

Therefore, having enjoyed your time in the rain or snow, be sure to give your roof a health check.

How To Inspect Your Roof

Frequent inspections require an eye that can detect details.

So, for a quick check-up, you can simply look for any peeled-off paint, MOLD, WATER DAMAGE, or fault lines. These are vital checkpoints to determine if your roof needs additional professional care.

DIY or Hiring A Professional?

Hundreds of blogs and thousands of business owners cannot decide whether to give their business's roof a quick inspection or hire a professional.

Inspecting the roof by yourself is a good exercise.

But to be one hundred percent sure about your business’s roof, it is advisable that you contact a professional roofing inspection company that is experienced and understands your business and its roof. After all, how can you take a chance on something that literally hangs over your head?

Parting Thoughts

Now that you know when to inspect your business’s roof and contact a professional, the next step is to get a professional roof repairing and restoration company like SERVPRO to do the difficult work for you.

Contact SERVPRO to get all your roof restoration and remediation needs covered now!

5 Best Ways to Clean Mold from The Walls in Your Home

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

Mold is a type of fungi that grows in the form of multicellular filaments.

It produces allergens and irritants, which lead to several health problems. That’s not all. Mold also adversely impacts the aesthetics and environment. Plus, it weakens the structural integrity of your home.

Hence, if you have a mold problem, you need to resolve it as soon as possible. Period.

So, how can you clean mold?

Here are five tried and tested ways of cleaning mold effectively:

1. Use Bleach and Water: The Old School Method

This old-school method requires rubber gloves and an N95 mask, so you do not end up breathing or touching the mold. Pour a mixture of bleach and water over the mold.

Use a heavy-duty sponge or scrub brush to scrub until the mold disappears completely.

This method is ideal for concrete walls, but it is physically draining.

2. Turn To Vinegar and Mold

Black mold can be killed rather easily through vinegar. Its odor dies out fairly quickly, and it can be used on both non-porous and porous surfaces.

Here’s how to go about cleaning:

? Pour white vinegar into a spray gun.

? Spray on the mold surface.

? Leave it for an hour.

? Then, wash it clean with water.

? Allow the surface to dry.

3. Removal Through Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen Peroxide is an easily accessible, anti-fungal chemical. It can be safely used on kitchen appliances and counters, tubs, and on toilet sanitary.

Before beginning the cleaning process, just spray concentrated hydrogen peroxide on an inconspicuous surface to see if the concentration is not too high.

If all is clear, spray the chemical on the target surface and then scrub the surface. Leave it for 10 minutes, then wipe the surface dry.

4. Spray Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties – no wonder it is a highly-effective mold remover.

All you need to do is add two cups of water and one teaspoon of the oil into a spray bottle, then spray on the surface. Later wipe the surface dry.

5. Disinfect With Grapefruit Seeds Extract

Citric acid within the grapefruit kills the mold naturally. Thus, it works as a perfect deodorizer and disinfectant too. This is how to go about cleaning mold with grapefruit extract:

? Take one cup of water and ten drops of grapefruit.

? Pour them into a spray bottle.

? Shake the bottle thoroughly and spray onto the surface.

? Wipe it off clean after a few minutes.

Does more rain mean more mold?

It can be! While rain can help reduce mold spores it also can mean more moisture trapped in your home. According to FEMA.GOV Mold growths, or colonies can start to grow on a damp surface within 24 to 48 hours. They reproduce by spores - tiny, lightweight “seeds”- that travel through the air. Molds digest organic material, eventually destroying the material they grow on, and then spread to destroy adjacent organic material.

If you are finding small spots of mold FEMA recommends cleaning and disinfecting that area. Here’s how they recommend doing so:

Before you begin - Make sure the working area is well ventilated.

Wear gloves, mask, and protect eyes.

If mold is present, clean a small test patch. If you feel you are experiencing health effects, consider hiring a professional to carry out the work.

All in all, we want you not to worry, any home or commercial property can quickly become infested with mold if a source of water is present. Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. Since mold can home or business if you suspect you have a mold problem. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation. Give us a call for your quote today at 706-965-7378. Mold & Moisture in your crawlspace?

If your basement or man cave has a funky mildew or mold smell that you just can’t seem to get rid of you may need your crawlspace encapsulated. Water seeps into your crawl space from excessive rain, flooding, or other issues and most likely you only cleaned what was visible. The water that was in the crawlspace remains and produces mold and other contaminants.

Once the air in your crawlspace rises, it seeps into your home and brings all of those things with it. Did you know you would be breathing in all of that mold! That can explain why some people experience health effects when they go over to some people's homes. So if you’re wondering why you should get your crawlspace encapsulated here are a few reasons:

  1. To reduce moisture/mold in your air - to improve air quality
  2. To protect your home from mold
  3. To avoid flooring damage - the vapor can rot the wood frames and floorings that make up the structure of the house.

It also has many more benefits as well!  As a trusted leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO has over 1,700 Franchises in the U.S. and Canada that are ready to help. We have the advanced training and equipment needed to clean or restore your home.

Can roofing issues cause mold?

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Two squirrels crawling in a roof On squirrel on top of a roof the other is crawling inside of the roof

A friend of ours noticed she had some low hanging trees which allowed for the squirrels in her year to hop from the trees to her roof. We all thought they were adorable and thought nothing of it. One day she noticed she could hear them inside her ceiling running around. That’s when it became a problem. She gave some animal experts a call to remove the squirrels and had a tree trimmer to trim her trees back some.  The problem is she was left with a hole in her roof. Here’s where the story gets worse: She ends up forgetting to get the hole fixed. Not completely forgot but it wasn’t a priority like it was to get the squirrels removed. About 2 months pass and she notices mold in one of her rooms. She figures it’s the change of seasons and decides it’s nothing a little bleach couldn’t get rid of. She was right, but only for the moment. With time that rooms mold issue worsened which lead up to her giving SERVPRO a call. Turns out that a small hole in her roof had begun to mold and was causing more issues in her roof. SERVPRO not only professionally cleaned her room, but their reconstruction team patched up her roof!

It only takes a small water leak, or even excess humidity, for mold to form in your home or business. Then, mold can spread quickly through the property in as little as 48 hours. Mold can produce allergens and irritants, and it has the potential to cause other health effects. If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Understanding Mold

Some restoration companies advertise “mold removal” and may even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy because removing all mold from a house or business is impossible; microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Here are the facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Give us a call today at 706-965-7378.

Mold Prevention

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Moisture and Mold Prevention and Control Tips:

Moisture control is the key to mold control, so when water leaks or spills occur indoors, ACT QUICKLY. If wet or damp materials or areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases, mold will not grow.

Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.

Make sure the ground slopes away from the building's foundation so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.

Keep air-conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly.

Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60% relative humidity (ideally, between 30% to 50%). Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, which is a small, inexpensive instrument (from $10 to $50) that is available at many hardware stores.

If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes, ACT QUICKLY to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity.

Mold Damage

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Mold Damage

Mold is not quite as common as the Georgia sunshine, but it does happen to many residents. There is a common myth that mold starts due to poor housekeeping or it only happens to hoarders. It is untrue because mold is everywhere.
Mold spores only become a threat when they have the right combination of moisture, temperature, and a food source. To stop the threat; an experienced restoration company knows that we need to break one side of that triangle of resources. The easiest method is to remove the source of moisture. SERVPRO of Chattooga, Dade, and West Walker Counties knows that the sooner we get started, the faster we can stop the mold damage and prevent further growth in a Summerville or Trion home.

To get quickly started, we have developed a list of questions for the homeowner that help us determine where the mold source might be along with other, useful information:

1. Is there visible mold in your home? Where is it?
2. Is there a strong, musty odor?
3. Have you had any problems with mold previously?
4. Is there current water damage or have you had water damage in the past? When did any previous damage happen?
Once we have this information, our inspectors can quickly find the source of the mold infestation, areas of excess moisture and how to stop both.

What We Can Do

Technicians begin by removing any standing water. For puddles and other small areas, we use water extractor wands to get into crawlspaces and small areas. For areas we cannot physically get into, we place a chemical desiccant to draw moisture from the surrounding air or set up a dehumidifier to draw larger amounts of moisture. Some of these machines can draw out over 20 gallons of water per day.

Once the air is dry enough, the mold spores return to a dormant state. If the spores are only on a surface, we attempt to vacuum them up or use dry wiping to remove them. Vacuuming and dry wiping get the spores out of the home without adding moisture to the environment.

If the spores had time to grow into building material such as drywall, we prefer to remove the entire panel and dispose of it. Attempting to dig out the mold to prevent replacing panels is rarely ever cost-effective. It is a labor-intensive process that adds up quickly on a final bill.

Humidity Fostering Mold

9/13/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is Approaching

We are creeping up on the most humid weather of the year, and that means it is about to be a thriving environment for mold down here in the south. Mold can be found both indoors and outdoors in places with high levels of moisture, such as leaks around pipes, windows, or roofs. If flooding has occurred and saturated your home, mold will also grow in drywall, dust, upholstery, and carpet, just to name a few. This is why it is of utmost importance to reach out to SERVPRO of Chattooga, Dade, and West Walker Counties immediately if any water damage has occurred - our specially trained professionals will ensure your home and belongings are properly cleaned and dried to inhibit mold growth.

Acting on Mold Growth

Mold can be many different colors, smell musty, and will often look like spots. Regardless of what type of mold it is, it needs to be removed. If you see visible mold, do not disturb it by attempting to clean the area yourself, touching the mold, or blowing air across affected areas. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home. If you suspect mold, keep loved ones out of the area, turn off fans and the HVAC system, and contact your friends at SERVPRO of Chattooga, Dade, and West Walker Counties!

Personal Protective Equipment

PPE

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be worn by our crews for various reasons. OSHA online states “Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal protective equipment may include items such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.”

If you would like more information on “PPE”, please click the link provided above to continue reading.

Our crews wear these often to ensure maximal safety when operating in your home or business. PPE’s may be used in crawlspaces, attics, or even a living room depending on what kind of damage is incurred!

Self-drying sometimes doesn't complete the drying process on water damage.

Cleaning on your own..

What happens when a customer decides that they can clean up a water damage with towels or a Wet Vac? MOLD!

Water damages

What you can see and also what you CAN'T see.

If there is no proper mitigation done by a professional, this damage can turn dangerous. Trying to mitigate water damage on your own may seem like an inexpensive alternative, but it can prove to be more expensive in the long run. There is a possibility that microbial growth, mold growth, or even structural damage could occur as a result of incomplete drying.

SERVPRO of Chattooga, Dade, and West Walker Counties has professional equipment that is able to detect moisture in the walls, insulation, floors, ceilings and anywhere else you might not be able to see.

It is free for us to come out and investigate. Water damage restoration is much less invasive and less expensive than mold remediation.

Moldy Food and Drinks

Mold can be found almost anywhere. Even your coffee.

Mycotoxins in My Food/Drink?

Don't make your midnight snack in the dark!

We've all been in the same situation. It's late at night and you just can't sleep without filling your stomach with a nice sandwich. Oh no! You open the bread cabinet and find your slices have mold on the corners. Do you still eat it? According to Science, you shouldn't. Even if you tear off that translucent green part, mold will still be in the bread. Mold, like plants, have root systems. So unless you want a mouthful of fungus you might need to make a midnight trip to the store or just skip the snack altogether.

What happens if I eat mold?

According to the USDA, some molds contain "mycotoxins". Now what is a mycotoxin you might ask? Great question! Mycotoxins are a property of foodborne molds that have the potential to make you sick. Some scientists disagree on the severity of sickness these mycotoxins can produce, but either way, who wants to eat mold? Not me.

Mold Prevention

Mold Damage

Mold is not quite as common as the Alabama sunshine, but it does happen to many residents.
