Water Damage Do's and Don'ts

During and after a water damage situation, you may think “What now?” If the water is clean, you are encouraged to follow these tips to ensure you are taking the right steps and avoiding the wrong:
Attempt to turn off the source of the water as quickly as possible. When you begin eliminating the excess water, be sure to do so with mops and blotting techniques. To lift furtniture above the water and avoid further damage, put blocks or foil under and around the furniture legs to lift them above the water. If the cushions on your furniture are wet, remove them and prop them up so that they may dry evenly and faster. Furthermore, remove rugs from the floors and hang leather and/or fur items separately.
Do not attempt to vacuum up water, as this could damage the vacuum. Keep books, paper materials and other colored products off the wet floors. If a ceiling appears to be saturated with water and/or caving, do not enter the room or area. Finally, avoid turning on ceiling fixtures such as fans and lighting.
